» Communicable Disease / Chronic Disease:
Lewis county public health offers information and counseling on all communicable diseases. The New York State Department of Health mandates certain communicable diseases to be investigated by the Communicable Disease Nurse and confidentially reported to the NYSDOH. A nurse will contact the person and/or family to attempt to determine how the disease was contracted and to teach how to prevent further spread of the disease. In doing this, we hope to prevent further disease outbreaks and or correct potential problems that may cause further disease. Lewis County has a increasing rate of newly diagnosed Hepatitis C individuals. There is no vaccine for this disease, but it can be prevented. For more information, please call 376-5453.

  • Influenza (Flu)
Lewis County Public Health offers frequent immunization clinics for Influenza which is likely what we are best known for. If you would like to see when our next clinic is, click here.

Influenza is a viral infection of the lungs which is spread most commonly through the air by coughing and sneezing. It is advised by doctors more frequently that you should receive the Influenza vaccine especially if you meet the following criteria:
         - 50 years of age or older,
         - Weakened immune system,
         - Medical staff and Health Care workers,
         - Pregnant women in the 2nd or 3rd trimester, or
         - Someone working or working in a nursing home.

  • Jail Health
Public Health is responsible for providing health services in the jail. We employ one registered nurse who works part time providing a variety of health services to the inmates at the Lewis County Jail. The nurse administers medications, attends sick call with the jail physician and addresses other health concerns the inmates might have. The nurse is also responsible for providing education to the Sheriff's Department on infection control practices, developing the Exposure Control Plan and providing Corrections Officers with medication administration education.

  • Rabies is a disease caused by a virus. Only mammals can get rabies. The primary sources of rabies in New York State are raccoons, skunks, foxes and bats. Rabies is invariably fatal but we can prevent rabies if treatment is provided shortly after exposure. Lewis County Public Health has developed a Rabies Control Program with the help of many interested and informed county residents. To read more about the Rabies Control Program, click on the link above.

It is very important to recognize that once symptoms occur, rabies is always fatal. Our goal is to educate the local populous to seek medical attention immediately after being bitten, and later to contact Lewis County Public Health. Our larger role is to prevent humans and domestic animals from dieing from Rabies.

How can you protect yourself from Rabies?
         - Have your dogs, cats, and livestock vaccinated,
(Dog and Cat vaccinations are required by law)
         - Avoid contact with wild animals, especially bats,
         - Avoid contact with wounds or saliva on exposed animals.

We are open weekdays from 8:30AM through 4:30PM. Call (315) 376-5453 or come by to see us!
